Blatherings From The Editor

Blathering

(November 2004)

Blathering  I’ve been blathering away in the SEAT newsletter for 8 years now.  My Dad said I was vaccinated with a phonograph needle…he may have been right.  He never got to see how much I could put out with a word processor at my finger tips.

In all those blatherings it’s always been my attempt to inform and/or amuse SEAT members with my opinions and experiences.  The older you get the more “experiences” you have in your repertoire.  Seems there are a lot of SEAT members who don’t lack in the long list of experiences department.  Ain’t it grand!

I have penned (or is that word processed) some good ones and some not so good ones.  One of my favorites was “You are what you ride” back in July of 99.  Every time I ride down Tombstone Canyon Road and on to Main Street in Bisbee I look in the store front windows to see if I’m still looking like my cool self.  Yup…sure am!

In one piece I hinted of religion and/or politics; it went over like a you-know-what in the you-know-where.  I got a bunch of emails (well 4…or was that 3) that took me over the coals.  Really reminded me that controversy over the height of your hand grips is one thing, controversy over gut level beliefs is a totally different animal and should not be approached unless fully armed (physically and mentally).  I’ve kept my poetic license pretty much tucked into my pants pocket since then.

I would say most of my blatherings were attempts to inform fellow riders of things that I learned along the way.  Hopefully one of those tips or tricks turned a fellow rider’s good day of riding into a great day of riding.

Trip planning and route planning pieces are some of my favorites.  I’m still learning a lot about long distance riding and it just feels good to pass it on to other riders.  I piqued one SEAT member’s interest and I got a really good response about places to stay.  Seems they had a lot of experience in Youth Hostels.  I published their response as a Guest Blathering.  I’m always open to a Guest Blathering.

Wanda has been my pillion seat riding companion for the vast majority of the 140,000 miles I have done on BMW motorcycles since I got our first one in 1992.  I’m here to tell you that she has had a bunch of “experiences” that have highly influenced my “experiences.”  And I loved every one of them.  Deryle Mehrten, yada-yada-yada, blah-blah-blah…
