2009 Iron Butt Rally - BMWs Score a 1 - 2 Finish
The past 2007 Iron Butt Rally is memorable to Beemer riders because of the number of BMWs that DNF’ed due to rear drive failures. It was embarrassing to say the least. BMW regained some respect in this years 2009 Iron Butt Rally, finishing 1st and 2nd. Jim Owen won the event riding a R1200RT, and Jeff Earls finished second riding a BMW K1200GT. Both riders did more than 12,000 miles in the eleven day event. That my friends is a lot of miles in a very short time. Three other BMW Riders finished in the Top 10. Chris Sakala finished 4th riding a R1200RT; Bob Lillev finished 8th on a K1200LT; and Ken Meese finished 9th on a K1200GT. Not bad! Well done to all the riders who participated. And congratulations to all the BMW riders for showing that BMW is still alive and kicking in the long distance riding world. Check out www.ironbutt.com for all the details. These guys and gals are truly The World’s Toughest Riders!
