Kansas Settlement Road & Highway 191 to Willcox

Coming up from Douglas on Highway 191 is only the beginning of a very long highway that stretches to the Canadian border.  If you want to bypass that short bit of freeway into Willcox on I-10 take Kansas Settlement Road.  You’ll come out on Highway 186 that will take you into the backdoor of Willcox at the Rex Allen Museum and Historic Railroad Avenue Park.

As you ride across Kansas Settlement Road you are in the heart of some serious agriculture and live stock ranching.  There are apple orchards and grape vineyards just out of site on both sides of the road.  There is a dairy farm with what looks like small dog houses for the up and coming dairy cows.  The Bonita Bean Company is always busy when we come through on a week day.  There is even a small runway for what looks like a crop duster.

Wanda and I parked on the old pavement where the Kansas Settlement General Store and Gas Station burned down and watched the Horseshoe II fire raging on the mountains just a few miles away.  Scary stuff…

The Kansas Settlement SLC&WA is a nice way to stay off the freeway and see what’s going on in rural Arizona.
