Mesilla/Truth or Consequences

March 17th to 19th

Mike Brewer is organizing this ride

TorC ride (formally Mesilla Valley)

Dates: Tuesday 3/17 to Thursday 3/19 - Hotels in text below

Start Location: Valero Station 15240 N Oracle Rd, Tucson, AZ 85739

About the ride:

Historically, SEAT has done this ride starting on the east side of Tucson and riding I-10 to Safford and on to Silver City. The highlight of the ride is NM 152 across Emory pass to Hillsboro and on to Las Cruces and Mesilla Valley. We would stay the night in Las Cruces and ride back to Tucson the next day, usually NM9 along the border. For those last couple years, riders have been making variations and sometimes returning to Tucson the same route that we rode to Las Cruces. I have gotten considerable feedback that the Hwy 9 route is straight and boring after having done it a few times.

Given the feedback from several annual riders of this event, I have changed the route to add a day / night but still ride NM 152 across Emory pass. We will do this in reverse to the previous Mesilla Valley rides, adding another element of variation.

Day 1, we will ride north from Tucson to globe, Show Low, Alpine, Luna and stop in Reserve NM. Hotel is Mountaineer Inn 575-533-6272. Rooms (14) are all double queen - $120 including tax.

Day 2, we will ride NM 12 to Datil and onto US 60 to the VLA (Very Large Array Radio Telescope) to a 2 hour stop. Proceeding on, we will ride through Magdalena and Socorro to NM1 and the El Camino Real parkway. A famous route for Spanish missionaries that parallels the Rio Grande River. Riding down the parkway, we will eventually arrive at Elephant Butte Lake and Truth or Consequences. Hotels are Rocket Inn 575-894-2964 $113 - $120 and Desert View 575-894-7282 $100. TorC is home to the TorC Brewing Company which is where Craig procured the beer for the Black Range ride. Recommended dinner is Sidekixx Kitchen. They are owned by TorC brewing company and feature their beer.

Day 3, we will ride to Hillsboro and across Emory pass to Silver City. From Silver City, we will ride US180, NM78, AZ 78 to US70 and US191 to Safford. After Safford, we will ride to I-10 and home to Tucson.

Riding in high country in the last days of winter has some risks of bad road conditions. I will make alternate plans. Riding over Emory pass, we have seen snow on the side of the road, but it has always been passable. Some other variations of this ride are possible if riders want to make their own route. The main anchor point will be staying in TorC on Wednesday, 3/18.

Please contact Mike Brewer if you want to join this ride. Please indicate if you want to ride the 3day /2night ride or if you want to create your own route. We will keep groups to 8 or less bikes. If you want to create your group, please let me know. More information will follow by 2/1.
