Moto GP Adventure
(report and pics from Bill Flannery)
Five of us attended this year’s Moto GP races in Austin Texas last weekend at the fabulous Circuit of the Americas (COTA) facility/track: Bill Flannery, Dean Roberts, Len/Linda Robbins and Mike Schaffer.
The entire weekend was an absolute blast and we witnessed the very last racing appearance by the world renowned, admired and respected Valentino Rossi in America, as he’s officially retiring at the end of this race season. The Moto 3 race was the most exciting in terms of lead challenges and lead changes but the Moto 2 and Moto GP races were great as well.
It was so much fun watching the practices, qualifying rounds and races and spending quality time with such wonderful SEAT folks. We also enjoyed dinner one evening at The Salt Lick BBQ restaurant about a half hour from our Austin motel. It’s absolutely HUGE (Texas style). It’s a great and very interesting experience for sure and one not to be missed if ever in the area.
Dean and I rode to Austin after riding in the Ozarks in Arkansas with three other riding friends from Oregon for six full days. I had heard how awesome the roads in the Ozarks are for motorcycle riding but they far exceeded my expectations in terms of road surface/smoothness and quality, with endless wonderful twisty curves over a multitude of beautiful rolling hills. In a word, the ride was SUPERB! All of us needed at least one new tire at the end of the long distance Oregon/Arizona to Ozarks and return ride which adequately verifies just how much fun we had on the ride. Riding in the Ozarks is highly recommended if the opportunity presents itself in the future.
The Moto GP races are returning to Austin in April 2022 (4/8, 4/9 & 4/10). I believe (but not confirmed to date) that Moto America races will be incorporated into the weekend as well, which would be fantastic in terms of how many races we would get to watch. I do plan on riding to and attending the races again in April and highly encourage everyone in the SEAT club to make plans to attend. It’s a two day straight shot freeway ride but can be a more fun four day ride, experiencing the beautiful Big Bend National Park, spectacular Rio Grande viewpoints and many other interesting sights along the way. Let Bill Flannery know if interested in attending the April races so we can possibly coordinate the ride and purchase reserved grandstand seats together for the weekend.
